HISTORIC SITES OF The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Palmyra, New York is the spiritual home of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). In 1820, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to the fourteen-year-old Joseph Smith in a grove near his family home near Palmyra. That "First Vision" was to set in motion events that would lead to the founding of a church whose membership today totals over 11 million worldwide.
Palmyra Temple
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regard the temple as the most sacred place on Earth. The Palmyra Temple (pictured to the right), the 100th temple built by the Church, stands on a hill overlooking the Sacred Grove, the site of the "First Vision."
While consecrating holy ground for the Palmyra Temple, Church President Gordon B. Hinckley stated:
"This is where it all began. I regard this temple as perhaps the most significant in one respect in the entire Church."
